INCREDIBLY Lightweight Backpack - Homemade

A review of my latest DIY project: A homemade backpack for ultra lightweight to super ultralight backpacking trips. Since developing an interest in ultralight backpacking, I've found that one of the challenges inherent to the sport is acquiring the gear necessary for this pursuit. Of course you can spend hundreds (perhaps even thousands) of dollars to get the gear that fits your needs, but I've found that the best way to keep costs low, as well as get a perfectly customized piece of equipment, is to make it yourself. So after putting much thought and research into exactly what I wanted in a UL backpack, I fired up the old sewing machine and went to work. Here is what I came up with... Homemade Ultralight Backpack: Concept: • Custom, durable, and lightweight pack for use in conjunction with SUL gear system. • 3 season use with multi-day, long distance capabilities. • Partially inspired by the GoLite Breeze, the Gossamer Gear G4, and my own specific needs. The set up is a little tricky because you are dealing with stakes to hold the tent down. This is more of a rain fly than a tent. There is NO BOTTOM for this tent. They sell a separate bottom for this model or you can buy the bug-screen insert that fits perfectly inside this tent. You can use trekking-poles to hold it up the tent, however this sucks because once you go inside the tent in limits the amount of space you have and you are always fearful of knocking down one or both of the trekking-poles and down comes they tent with you in it. I like to use the corner loops and tie the tent to a tree using string or rope. This way you have more room and you can roll over in the night without worry of bringing down the house. Excellent sleeping bagBy rppipa01Being a larger sized backpacker (6'2'' and 200 lbs), I wanted a sleeping bag that was roomy and comfortable but which was compressible enough to carry in my pack. This sleeping bag was exactly what I was looking for. The semi-rec shape gives you plenty of room (you can even roll onto your side) but cuts down on the weight/bulk of a fully rectangular bag. Very full-featured but still very lightBy Constant ReaderI am very happy with this pack. I have now had it on two outings and it has helped to transform my backpacking. I changed to this pack from a much heavier pack, and at the same time I reduced my weight by eliminating some non-essential items. Last year my weight for a Sierra trek was about 43 pounds, this year I was right at 30 pounds, and it made a huge difference in the effort level and overall trail happiness.I am 6'0" and weigh about 170. I have long legs and and an average torso, and a 32" waist. The hip belt on this pack fits me to perfection, but it is not heavily padded in the front. For me this is a plus as I don't like padding extending past my hip bones, but some people may object. Half of a great light tent for 2-3PBy Reverend AaronI have both the Shangri-la 3 and Shangri-la 5 (SL3 and SL5). Both are awesome lightweight tents- light enough to be used by ultralighters, but durable enough for lightweight backpackers and car camping, even for folks with little kids, like me. The SL3 nest and shelter are both really easy to set up- unstuff it, lay it flat, stake it out, add the pole, toss the tarp over the top and hook them into the same stakes. The shelter/tarp by itself takes more time to get it all lined up right, if you're not using the standard floor or standard nest, but still very straight forward. I've had the SL3 for a year now, and it's done well on 4 backpacking trips and a dozen car camping trips. The SL3 Nest is more of a two or two and a half person tent if you're using the center pole- plenty of room for me, my wife, our two year old, and all of our gear.
